Technical Interviews

Prepare to explain how you think as an engineer.

Technical interviews often go beyond finding the right answer. You may need to solve an unfamiliar problem, explain a design choice or discuss the engineering behind a project you've built.

Through one-to-one preparation, we'll practise these situations together. I'll help you examine your reasoning, explain your decisions clearly and identify what to improve before your interview.

The answer matters. How you get there matters too.

  1. 01

    Problem

You may face an unfamiliar technical problem without all the details you need to solve it.

  2. 02

    Clarify

Before jumping into a solution, clarify what's being asked. Identify missing requirements, explain your assumptions and understand the constraints.

  3. 03

    Reason

Compare possible approaches and consider what each would solve well or make harder. Adapt your reasoning when the problem changes.

  4. 04

    Decide

Choose an approach you can justify, based on the requirements and the alternatives you've considered.

  5. 05

    Explain

Talk through your thinking as you work, so the interviewer can follow your decisions and understand how you'd check the result.

The goal is to make your reasoning clear, from the questions you ask to the decisions you make.

What we can practise together.

Depending on the role and interview format, we can focus on areas such as:

  • 01

    Technical Problem Solving

Working through unfamiliar technical problems and explaining your approach as you go.

  • 02

    Requirements & Assumptions

Clarifying incomplete requirements and recognising assumptions before choosing a solution.

  • 03

    Software Design

Explaining architecture and design choices, including why a particular approach makes sense.

  • 04

    Your Engineering Projects

Discussing projects you've built, the decisions you made and what you would improve.

  • 05

    Testing & Debugging

Approaching debugging, software testing and reliability questions with a clear method.

  • 06

    Engineering Decisions

Comparing possible solutions and explaining the trade-offs behind your decisions.

Know where to start and what to improve.

  1. 01

    Understand your starting point

We'll discuss the roles you're targeting and what you find challenging in technical interviews, so we can focus on what matters to you.

  2. 02

    Identify what matters

Work through technical problems or discuss your own projects, with feedback on your reasoning and how clearly you explain your decisions.

  3. 03

    Prioritise your next steps

Leave with clear priorities for your preparation, based on the strengths and areas for improvement we identify together.

Whichever service you choose, you'll receive a personalised Action Brief capturing the key points of our discussion and practical next steps you can take forward.

Engineering preparation, not scripted answers.

We'll use technical problems and examples from your own projects to practise how you reason through a challenge and explain your decisions.

The focus is on understanding your approach, rather than memorising answers or drilling questions from a particular coding platform.

This isn't behavioural interview coaching or access to private company interview material. Preparation can help you approach technical interviews more confidently, but no interview or job outcome can be guaranteed.

Industry judgement. Academic perspective.

My approach combines practical software engineering experience with university-level technical teaching.

Software Engineering

As a practising Software Engineer, I work across software quality, test automation and technical decisions that influence how reliable software is developed.

Academic Perspective

As an Associate Lecturer in Computing, I help students understand technical concepts, develop their problem-solving skills and explain the reasoning behind their work.

Together, these perspectives allow us to approach interview preparation from both sides: understanding the engineering behind a solution and learning how to communicate it clearly.
